The dog liked Mr. Fredricksen right away. “My name is Dug,” he said. “I have just met you, and I love you.”

Then the dog explained that he had a really amazing electronic collar. “My master is a good and a smart master. He made me this collar so I can talk.” Then he turned his head fast and shouted, “Squirrel!” I think that was a dog thing. He must have really liked squirrels.

Dug’s collar had lots of fun-looking buttons. I started playing with them. The buttons made Dug speak in a whole bunch of different languages.

“I would be happy if you stopped,” Dug said when I switched him back to English.

“My pack sent me on a special mission,” Dug said. “Have you seen a bird?” Then, all of a sudden, Kevin just leaped out of the bushes and tried to tackle Dug. “That is the bird! May I take your bird back to camp as my prisoner?” Dug begged.

“Yes! Yes!” Mr. Fredricksen shouted. “Take it!”

Dug was so cool! “May we keep him?” I asked Mr. Fredricksen.

“No,” he said.

“But he’s a talking dog!” I quickly pointed out.

All Mr. Fredricksen did was grumble, “It’s just a weird trick or something.”

I was really happy because I was keeping both Kevin and Dug! We were like a little parade. Mr. Fredricksen was in the lead, followed by me, followed by Kevin, who was followed by Dug, who kept saying to Kevin, “Please be my prisoner. Please be my prisoner.”

That night, it rained a lot. We tied the house to a rock. I tried to put up a tent for Mr. Fredricksen. It didn’t work very well. There were a whole lot of poles!

“Tents are hard,” I finally said to Mr. Fredricksen, and sat down next to him.

“Why didn’t you go ask your dad how to build a tent?” he asked.
